Author Of The Month: J.K. Rowling

I thought I’d start Author Of The Month with an author who I believe is a classic from this generation, J.K. Rowling.

Joanne Kathleen Rowling is of course most famous for her Harry Potter series, which captivated the world; both children and adults. I remember standing in line at the bookstore to buy my copy of the Order of the Phoenix, the Half-Blood Prince and the Deathly Hallows the day they were released. I particularly remember the Deathly Hallows being released because was at school back then and had planned to take a day of school to finish reading it if necessary. I didn’t need it, I started reading it about 11.30 on Saturday morning and finished around lunchtime of Sunday (and even got about 6-8 hours’ sleep Saturday night). My point with all this reminiscing being that as an author, Rowling created a series with such as huge cultural impact that across the globe people wanted to buy her books the minute they were released and put their lives on hold until they’d finished them.

As a film adaption of the books, overall I also felt they stayed pretty true to the books. Perhaps having the book and film releases within the same decade meant some people read the books with the film in mind. But I remember seeing the first film after reading the first 3 or 4 books and it still resonating with the books.

Rowling’s Potter Universe I would argue is one of the biggest fictional universes created; it has sparked spin offs such as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them, it has resulted in theme parks and there also appears to be more fanfiction and fan art for the Potter Universe than there are more most others. People also have got Potter related tattoos, collectable Potter items, there is the Pottermore website and there is still news articles and social media discussion around the Potter Universe. The latest news appears to be that in January 2016 Rowling revealed more schools in the Potter Universe.
